Methodology/Academics

Print | E-mail

Thomas A. Edison is the only private high school in Oregon specifically designed to meet the needs of students with complex learning disabilities. We have a strong record of academic success, with the vast majority of our students receiving their high school diplomas. Most Edison graduates choose to continue their education at a community college, trade school or a four-year college.

Because no two students are exactly alike, Edison takes a customized approach to learning, offering individual attention when and where it is needed. Within our supportive academic environment, students develop self-discipline, practice self-advocacy and gain growing confidence in their ability to learn.

  • We identify the student's learning style
  • We offer appropriate learning-based accommodations
  • We adapt our methods to fit individual diagnoses, but do not modify ("water down") our curriculum
  • We emphasize experiential learning
  • We offer computer-aided instruction
  • We have a shorter school day than most mainstream high schools
  • We maintain an average student/teacher ratio of eight to one
  • We focus on providing our students with organizational strategies and study skills
  • We teach basic academic skills in all classrooms, and emphasize core-content classes to facilitate academic progress
  • We provide elective classes to expose students to a wide variety of topics
  • We post weekly online reports for parents, with cumulative grades, homework scores, missing homework and teacher comments
  • We offer online access for students to see teacher comments and access homework
  • We hold regular meetings with parents

Thomas A. Edison High School is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Our academically challenging curriculum follows the State of Oregon's graduation requirements and, whenever possible, prepares students to meet Certificate of Initial Mastery benchmarks.

"Edison is an ideal placement for our bright LD kids. You do a nice job of supporting kids and parents. You set high academic standards; the emphasis is on learning. Edison makes no compromises on educational standards."

-Tim Ullum, Placement Coordinator, Oregon City School District
