Programmatic

  • We select students who best suit our profile for admission
  • We do not admit or keep students who do not wish to be at Edison
  • We maintain an average student/teacher ratio of one teacher for every seven or eight students
  • We emphasize core-content courses to facilitate academic progress
  • We provide elective classes to expose students to a wide variety of topics and enhance community awareness
  • We offer individual and group counseling with the focus on skill development
  • We utilize weekly reports sent to parents with cumulative grades, homework scores, missing homework and teacher comments
  • We hold regular meetings with parents

Academics

  • We identify the student's learning style
  • We adapt our methods to fit individual diagnoses but do not modify ("water down") our curriculum
  • Students receive individual attention when necessary
  • We emphasize experiential learning in the classroom
  • We focus on providing our students with organizational strategies and study skills
  • We teach basic academic skills in all classrooms
  • We offer a shorter school day than most mainstream high schools
  • We offer computer-aided instruction
  • We actively solicit student input on activities and methods

Non-Academic

  • We provide a caring, safe atmosphere
  • We invest students with responsibility and encourage self advocacy
  • We use positive reinforcement as an effective tool
  • We teach basic relationship skills and classroom deportment
  • We provide students with frequent feedback
  • We develop trusting and supportive relationships with students
  • We provide physical outlets for our students through elective courses

  • We regulate medication to be taken at school
